Set up push notifications
MPC-RSS sends Alert-MPEC e-mails. Existing mail and push features can turn them into immediate phone notifications without a separate MPC-RSS app.
Basic idea
The Alert-MPEC subject contains the most important short signals: magnitude, designation, trend and station code, for example [MPC Alert] 19.3 ST26G80 weaker [500]. Station code and limiting magnitude are personal settings for e-mail subscriptions only; the defaults are station 500 and 20.0 mag.
The phone then displays the normal push notification from your mail app or push service, rather than a separate MPC-RSS notification.
Simplest option
Mark the sender or subjects containing [MPC Alert] as important in your mail app. Both iPhone and Android can enable dedicated notifications for important senders or labels.
This costs nothing and needs no additional service. Reliability depends on the push delivery of your mail app.
Filter criteria
Useful filters include: subject contains [MPC Alert], subject contains your station code such as [X09], or subject contains brighter. You can also search the message body for Limiting magnitude, your personal limit, or 48-hour visibility magnitude check: passes.
To receive only observable objects, filter for the visibility status: object above the personal horizon, Sun at least 6 degrees below the horizon, and magnitude within the personal limit.
Push services
Pushover, ntfy and similar services can create a push notification from a forwarded alert mail. Set up a rule in your mailbox that forwards matching MPC-RSS messages to the service address.
Advantage: you control sound, priority, lock-screen display and quiet hours. Disadvantage: some services charge a fee or require an additional account.
Recommended rule
A useful initial rule is: sender is the MPC-RSS sender address, subject contains [MPC Alert], subject contains your station code in square brackets, and message body contains 48-hour visibility magnitude check: passes.
This delivers only alerts matching your station and limiting magnitude. The regular e-mail remains available as the complete Alert-MPEC.
